Meet Marissa! She’s such a sweetheart and inbetween Cheerleading Camp and other trips this summer we scheduled some time for her senior portraits. She’s graduating in 2012 and wants to pursue a degree in healthcare when she’s done. She’s got the cutest southern accent and I thought it was so sweet that she brought her bible. I usually encourage everyone to bring a few things that they love to the session to see if we can work them into the pictures and it was really sweet that she chose to bring that.

Let’s talk about props. So you’ve booked your senior session, or you’re thinking about getting your senior portraits done with us. Part of the preparation for the session includes a consultation. We chat with you about what you like, your favorite colors, hobbies, your style, and all of that fun jazz. This help us pick out the perfect location to do the photo shoot. But that’s just the beginning. We want your senior pictures to really show off who you are at this time in your life. We’ll talk through ideas for outfits and accessories (having fun accessories always jazzes up the shoot a bit without a big long change. just throwing on a chunky necklace or hair piece can totally change the look of your outfit and give you more variety). After all of this is sorted out then we move on to the fun part. Props. They aren’t totally necessary for a good shoot. In fact, plenty of people do their shoot without them and we can work with the scenery and just you. But sometimes when you are looking for something thats above and beyond that, something that really stands out as a unique portrait, its fun to incorporate props.

In the session above we dragged out a gold vintage couch to a field. It added such a fun element to the pictures so instead of just standing in the middle of the field we could play around with poses on the couch. We also brought along a big bunch of balloons. Maybe its the inner child in me but I never get tired of balloons at photo shoots. I mean, how fun are they? They add a pop of color, a point of interest and give you something to hold onto to get comfortable with posing.

We have a fun selection of props like this (you can actually rent the gold couch for your session, let us know if you are interested in it!) and also like to talk through things that you have at home that might add a fun element to the pictures. The possibilities are endless, musical instruments, vintage cameras, your dog, interesting furniture, a parasol or umbrella, picture frames, sports stuff, hobbies, old suitcases….
